title The Lost Pubs of Diss, Norfolk - 26th April 2023 intro Well, two of them at least: Isobel's having a hair cut, so there's some time to kill with a wander around Diss, this time taking in some of the grand houses on Mount Street and a couple of former pubs. First, there's the Cherry Tree on Roydon Road, visited only a few times just before it closed in 1990 - primarily to rehearse with a band formed with Gerald, the boyfriend of former Stuston neightbour Janet. We'd rehearse in the infamous Spider's Web "nightclub" building out the back, then have a beer at the bar. The band did a single gig at Roydon village hall before folding, whilst the pub is now a vet. There's also another shot of the former White Horse on Market Hill, which closed just a few years ago and which is now a house, and a shot of what could be considered an anti-pub: the former Providence Hotel on St. Nicholas Street, set up to counter the general debauchery of the area by trying to lure pisstanks out of pubs with the offering of hot food and religious education. imgp2694 There's a poster for Isobel's play near the bins imgp2695 Bailey's Fish and Chips - once a regular haunt imgp2698 Grand house on Mount Street imgp2700 Another nice house on Mount Street imgp2702 A very fancy Georgian pad near the Saracen's Head imgp2703 Browne's and the former Midland (now HSBC) Bank imgp2705 1840s stained glass in St. Mary the Virgin, Diss imgp2707 Another nice stained-glass window in St. Mary's imgp2708 The 1857 resurrection nave window of St. Mary imgp2711 A mediaeval tableau of the Ten Commandments imgp2713 The light and airy nave of St. Mary's, Diss imgp2715 The derelict Christpher Hall and Diss Tandoori imgp2720 Diss Tandoori is closed up and derelict imgp2722 A pigeon sits in a hole in a wall imgp2723 The former Cherry Tree on Roydon Road imgp2724 A papered-up window in Christopher Hall imgp2725 There's traffic chaos on St. Nicholas Street imgp2726 The former Temperance Hotel, now Happy Palace imgp2727 The new-ish park and boardwalk imgp2728 Arches of the 1800s Grasmere Lodge remain imgp2733 A fluffy duckling pootles after its mother imgp2736 A nice illustration of Diss imgp2738 The bins of Draper's Row, near the back of Browne's imgp2741 The former Candies clothes and shoe shop imgp2742 Diss Market Place and the fruit stall imgp2743 Diss Museum on the Market Place imgp2744 The Mere is pretty full at the moment imgp2748 The Keyhole jewellery place is closing down imgp2749 The old White Horse is now an anonymous house imgp2751 Fancy supports on the Saracen's Head imgp2753 Part of Fred and Harry's Lego people collection
