title Easter in South Zeal and Moretonhampstead, Devon - 9th April intro We haven't seen Grandma J in ages, and it's Easter, so we combine the two with a trip down to Devon and a stay in a cottage in South Zeal - a delightful never-before-visited village, despite being only just off the road between Spreyton and Okehampton, and only a few miles from Sis near Chagford. It's also the first long-distance trip with the all-electric car, which is not without its difficulties, especially because it's Good Friday and the world and its dog are also on the road. Our first attempt is Birchanger on the M11, but this is a disaster as 20 cars fight for two chargers, so we bail out through roadwork queues and find a BP Pulse off the A414 near Harlow. This is better, as it's quieter, but still involves a half-hour wait for a free charger. From there, we head off to Fleet on the M3 which has a reasonable number of chargers, so we get a spot almost straight away. However, the 40kW charging overheats the battery so we have to wait a bit for it to cool down, which is a bit nerve-wracking. At least there's a Pizza Express, so we while away another hour session with some food. Finally, we're at Exeter Moto's Gridserve which has 20 or so spots, so we get straight on for our final charge. All in all though, having to recharge every 150 miles or so turns a six hour journey into a nine-hour one. Anyway, once in Devon, we explore South Zeal, which amazingly, for such a small village, has two pubs, then visit Grandma J in Moretonhampstead, where we haul her out for some tea and cake. Then we're off to Sis and Matt's for an Easter buffet barbeque, followed by a walk around the edge of the moor. There's also a bit of air-rifle shooting down in the bottom garden. imgp0230 The car's got a companion at Harlow Gate imgp0231 A row of hire vans at Harlow Gate imgp0237 Fred wanders off to the petrol-station shop imgp0240 We stop for pizza at Fleet Services South imgp0241 We try to get going again at Fleet on the M3 imgp0242 Back inside, waiting for the battery to cool down imgp0249 We've made it to Moto Service at Exeter imgp0251 Gridserve Moto has a much more impressive set up imgp0256 Harry meets a dog in the King's Arms, South Zeal imgp0259 The boys outside the King's Arms imgp0260 Sis, Harry and Isobel in the pub restaurant imgp0262 Matt takes a photo imgp2300 Harry tumbles upside-down in the cottage lounge imgp2303 We walk down the main road through the village imgp2305 The boys check out the village shop imgp2306 K6 phonebox and the chapel of St. Mary imgp2310 Harry spins around in the playground imgp2313 The boys try out an old-school rocking horse imgp2316 We walk back to the cottage imgp2322 The cottage has photos of South Zeal in the 1800s imgp2324 Our cottage, on the right, in the 1800s imgp2328 A view out of the bedroom window imgp2331 A memorial cross in the chapel garden imgp2332 Walking past the village shop imgp2334 The recreation ground gets rolled imgp2338 A delicately-piled bin in Moretonhampstead imgp2340 The view from Grandma J's room imgp2344 Grandma J chats to Isobel imgp2345 The Lucy Wills building, from 1898 imgp2348 Grandma J says hi to a dog outside the butcher's imgp2350 Isobel and Harry do cubes in Central Café imgp2354 Isobel guides Grandma J back up the road imgp2357 The Van du Pain bakery van imgp2358 We head off to explore Moretonhampstead imgp2360 A telephone box with "Covid Hoax" on it imgp2365 The status of George Parker Bidder on Lime Street imgp2367 St. Andrew's Church at the top of Fore Street imgp2368 The nave of St. Andrew's Church imgp2371 The nave window of St. Andrew's, Moretonhampstead imgp2375 The Moretonhampstead Motor Museum imgp2379 We briefly get onto the edge of Dartmoor imgp2381 The boys have a car picnic imgp2384 Fred roams around with a Strawberry Squeezer imgp2387 The gang hangs around in front of the cottage imgp2389 The cute little chapel of St. Mary's imgp2394 Providence Methodist Chapel imgp2399 Sis knocks up an Easter buffet imgp2403 Fred watches as Harry does air rifle imgp2406 Nosher shoots a few targets imgp2412 Fred takes up the prone position imgp2423 Harry pokes around with stuff in the garden imgp2431 Sis and Isobel in the garden imgp2432 Matt's on sausage duty imgp2436 A view of the Methodist Chapel imgp2440 Doug the Dog looks hopeful imgp2446 We head off for a walk imgp2448 A Queen Victoria post box in Providence imgp2449 A Dartmoor gate imgp2452 The awesomely-derelict Muddy Farm imgp2458 Walking down a Devon lane near Aysh imgp2459 A hairy cow on a hill imgp2461 A gnarly tree near Little Ensworthy imgp2464 Doug gets an inappropriately-oversized stick imgp2466 A pile of animal bedding by a cottage imgp2467 A couple of chickens strut on a wall imgp2468 The boys avoid a very muddy path imgp2474 A pair of small dogs roam around on a lane imgp2480 Some Dartmoor ponies hang around imgp2488 A Devon lane towards Gidleigh imgp2497 A sheep and lambs in a field near Moortown imgp2499 A very hairy pony trots over excitedly imgp2504 Fred gives the hairy pony a scratch imgp2509 Isobel gives the pony a scratch on the nose imgp2512 A Dartmoor thatched cottage imgp2513 A very traditional cottage imgp2517 Doug's in the river at Forder imgp2520 The massive barn wall of Muddy Farm imgp2521 Authentic Nissen-hut village Hall, Wonson imgp2528 Harry talks to some sheep imgp2534 Matt has a go with the air rifle imgp2536 Fred shows off the leaking bottle target imgp2542 A couple of American cars lurk in a barn
