title A Postcard from Thetford, Norfolk - 15th March 2023 intro We'd racked up a load of empty SodaStream gas bottles and the nearest place to change them, without having to post them, is Sainsbury's in Thetford. So by way of something to do, we head up to job that job, a journey which also provides something of an homage to the late Grandad's favourite pastime of visiting the Thetford municipal tip. Whilst there, we have lunch in the Bell Inn, and then visit the extensive ruins of the old Thetford Abbey - yet another casualty of Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries. imgp1824 Another pub bites the dust imgp1825 A derelict pub on the roundabout imgp1826 The Burrell Museum's impressive shed imgp1827 Isobel at the bar of the Bell Inn imgp1828 One of the Thetford Bell's rooms imgp1829 The impressive main bar of the Bell Inn imgp1830 An architecturally-interesting corridor imgp1831 One of the rarer postboxes: an Edward VII imgp1834 A butcher plays on the Dads Army connection imgp1835 Curious bells near Boots on King Street imgp1836 An empty shop on King Street imgp1838 The Green Dragon, and the tables of Wetherspoon imgp1839 The British Legion building on Market Place imgp1840 Dads Army mural on the back of the Carnegie Rooms imgp1843 The Dads Army museum and the Carnegie Rooms imgp1844 Isobel roams around the Market Place imgp1845 A memorial on the Market Place imgp1846 A quintessential 1950s Post Office imgp1847 The shops of King Street in Thetford imgp1849 Tanner Street, with Lloyds Bank imgp1850 A golden statue of local boy Thomas Paine imgp1852 The Bell Inn - our lunch-stop location imgp1853 Checking out the kebab shops of White Hart Street imgp1855 An alleyway off White Hart Street imgp1856 Isobel in an underpass beneath London Road imgp1857 Two Isobels in a dodgy underpass subway imgp1863 We have a look around Thetford Priory imgp1866 The ruined nave of Thetford Abbey imgp1867 The old Abbott's House imgp1868 Isobel looks at some more ruins imgp1872 More ruins of the old abbey imgp1875 Electrical busbars and a danger of death imgp1879 A swan does a one-legged swim imgp1880 A Death Eater walks the path along the Little Ouse imgp1882 A wrecked child's bicycle and a footbridge imgp1884 Another subway under London Road imgp1885 We walk back past a housing estate imgp1889 A "water boosting" station by the Little Ouse imgp1894 A partially-submerged punt on the Little Ouse imgp1897 A nice building near the bridge imgp1899 The 1829 cast-iron bridge on Bridge Street imgp1901 1960s buildings on Riverside Walk imgp1903 Isobel peers over the bridge imgp1905 A statue of Captain Mainwaring sits alone imgp1906 Isobel on Bridge Street imgp1907 There's a feeble attempt to do the love locks thing imgp1909 Derelict rooms above some shops imgp1910 St. Peter's Church on White Hart Street imgp1913 Isobel checks out stuff in Iceland imgp1914 The checkouts of Iceland in Thetford
