title Discovering the Hidden City: Norwich, Norfolk - 23rd May 2022 intro Randomly browsing aerial photos of Heigham Street in Norwich in the 1980s led to the discovery that there used to be an entire railway station nearby. It had been demolished by 1985, but a few tantalising bits remain, including part of one of the platforms and the odd railway sleeper. This therefore marks the almost-starting-point of a long walk from the old Crocodile Building - once the main office for Norwich printing company Soman-Wherry Press where Nosher worked from 1987-88, and apparently a pub before that - to the cathedral, via the riverside and lots of previously unseen things: from one of only two pneumatic pumping stations in the country, to some epic factory buildings around the "Shoe Quarter". It proves once again that the view of a city is completely different on foot compared to driving around. imgp3987 An impressive building on St. Giles Street imgp3989 An old Presbyterian chapel on Willow Lane imgp3990 A quaint little house on the end of Willow Lane imgp3991 A Wisteria house on Pottergate imgp3992 The end of Pottergate imgp3993 The back of the pub on Ten Bells Lane imgp3995 The Ten Bells on St. Benedict Street imgp3996 Country house on St, Margaret's Street imgp3998 An amusing alteration to a car park "out" sign imgp4001 The derelict Ray Freeman cycles on Heigham Street imgp4002 Panks Engineers, unchanged since the 1980s imgp4003 The former Crocodile Building - Soman's old offices imgp4004 The site where Soman's print works used to be imgp4006 Cushion sawmills, also unchanged since the 80s imgp4008 The back of Capitol House imgp4011 Sleepers and platform wall at Norwich City Station imgp4012 Another view of the remaining platform imgp4018 More ghostly remains of the old station imgp4026 A painted robot on a roller door imgp4027 Britain's oldest pre-cast concrete toilet imgp4032 New Mills sluice, where tidal waters and river meet imgp4036 The late-Victorian pumping station imgp4041 A stripey boat is moored next to some graffiti imgp4043 An old Victorian sewer imgp4045 The old Bullard's brewery on Coslany Street imgp4046 Coslany Street, looking up to Westwick Street imgp4047 A nicely-reflected building on the Wensum imgp4050 Thomas More's Utopia as been painted on a wall imgp4052 Semi-derelict warehouse on Duke Street imgp4053 Pigeons in a broken window imgp4057 The old St. Michael's Church on Oak Street imgp4058 The Golden Star on Duke Street/Colegate imgp4060 Nice Georgian buildings imgp4065 The grand St. Mary's Works in the Shoe Quarter imgp4067 The round-towered St. Mary's Church imgp4069 The back of St. George's Works imgp4070 The inside of St. George's Church imgp4073 The end of Colegate imgp4074 Looking down St. George's Street imgp4076 Martineau Memorial Hall imgp4077 A plaque to Mark Wilks on Friar's Quay imgp4079 Another impressive old factory building imgp4080 Pub and Paddle canoes moored up on the Wensum imgp4082 A former haunt: The Ribs of Beef on Wensum Street imgp4084 Another occasional haunt: The Mischief imgp4085 The Wensum almost looks like Bruges imgp4087 The bottom end of Elm Hill imgp4089 Wicker art in Norwich Cathedral imgp4091 Alongside the nave in Norwich Cathedral imgp4092 Outside in the Cloisters imgp4093 People run around in the Cloisters Labyrinth imgp4098 A line of roof bosses imgp4099 An angel surrounded by gilded leaves imgp4103 A nice view of the Catherdral spire imgp4106 Some dude plays recorder on London Street imgp4111 Skies darken behind Lower Goat Lane imgp4113 The Guildhall on Gaol Hill imgp4116 The top of Gentlman's Walk imgp4117 Tiled 1920s (?) building on St. Giles Street imgp4119 Another view of the Guildhall imgp4122 Looking over Norwich's outdoor market imgp4123 The now-defunct CEYMS building on Haymarket imgp4125 The derelicty Topshop on Haymarket imgp4126 In the passages of Norwich Market imgp4127 A Hoover spares stall imgp4131 The underground world of St. Giles car park
