title Pork Pies and Dockside Dereliction, Melton Mowbray and Liverpool - 7th August 2021 intro We're on the way to Ireland via the overnight freight ferry from Liverpool. Because it's mostly unaccompanied freight, it's not that busy with only around eight cars and a few HGV drivers, which makes for a nice quiet crossing in the relative comfort of our two cabins. There's even dinner and breakfast, courtesy of a pretty decent on-board canteen. To break up the journey, we stop off at Melton Mowbray - the home of pork pies - and do a spot of exploring around Liverpool One, a large partly-covered shopping mall built on top of existing streets, not far from the waterfront in Liverpool. There's also a bit more of a chance to explore some of the epic dereliction along the old dock road on the way to the ferry. imgc7739 Arbuckle's restaurant at Downham Market services imgc7740 The first wee and Pringles stop near Downham Market imgp8085 Burton Street car park in Melton Mowbray imgp8086 A quiet churchyard of St. Mary's in Melton Mowbray imgp8089 The cobbles of Church Street imgp8091 Melton Mowbray's market place imgp8094 The George Hotel on High Street imgp8095 We walk up Nottingham Street imgp8096 The Dickinson and Mrs King's pork pie shop imgp8097 Dead bunny graffiti behind Argos imgp8098 The back of Argos imgp8099 The closed-down Leisureland Amusements imgp8100 Bright plastic things for sale imgp8101 We head into Dickinson and Morris pork pie shop imgp8102 Looking down Nottingahm Street to the market imgp8103 Shelves full of pork pies imgp8104 Melton Mowbray: rural capital of food imgp8105 We queue up for some cakes and sundries imgp8106 Isobel gets some fruit on the market imgp8107 Striding across Market Place imgp8109 Back on Church Street imgp8112 We pause to look at St. Mary's Church imgp8114 We stop for lunch on a park bench imgp8115 A swan and cygnets on the River Wreake imgp8122 The swan and its three cygnets float down river imgp8124 An empty band stand imgp8126 An ice-cream shop in the park imgp8128 Cool spiky blue flowers imgc7742 Fred's got a bandana on his head as Harry gets a hug imgc7743 Harry roams around the services near Derby imgc7744 The boys hang off a barrier imgc7748 Derby and Burton services on the A50 imgc7749 Outside, there are a load of empty business units imgc7752 It lashes it down on the M6 imgc7755 The boys are bored imgc7756 More apocalyptic rain imgp8129 The derelict Littlewood's building in Liverpool imgp8131 The large and derelict Littlewood's building imgp8134 The Littlewood's building on Edge Lane imgp8135 A close-up of dereliction and graffiti imgp8137 Part of the building has caught fire recently imgp8142 The derelict car park and fading sign imgp8143 More car-park dereliction imgp8144 The remains of the Littlewood's sign imgp8146 Bright graffiti imgp8148 A derelict shop on Devon Street imgp8149 The subterranean car park of Liverpool One imgp8150 We queue up for the lift imgp8151 It's quite stylish for a car park imgp8152 The large outdoor shopping Mall of Liverpool One imgp8153 It's raining again imgp8155 A wet Church Street in Liverpool imgp8156 Top Shop on Church Street imgp8157 We stop off in Boots for some sea-sick tablets imgp8158 Tarleton Street imgp8160 The boys are excited to find a Lego shop imgp8162 A giant Lego Chewbacca imgp8165 Fred looks at a Lego Ghostbusters car imgp8167 The boys pay for some small packets of Lego imgp8168 Pink lights in Liverpool One imgp8169 Isobel roams around imgp8172 The Liver Building on The Strand imgp8173 Dereliction on Regent Road imgp8174 An abandoned Café sign on Regent Road imgp8175 Derelict warehouses on the old dock road imgp8176 Standing water and tanks imgp8177 A large derelict concrete warehouse imgp8178 Demolition on Regent Road imgp8181 The car on Regent Road imgp8182 Discarded tyres, caravans and dereliction imgp8183 Regent Road in Liverpool's derelict docks imgp8184 An ancient sign for a Stevedoring business imgp8185 The derelict Merseyside Food Products building imgp8187 A derelict beauty training building imgp8189 Down in Liverpool Port imgp8190 The stern of our freight ferry imgp8191 We grab a few things out of the car imgp8195 Fred heads off the car deck imgp8197 We cross a gangway on the ferry imgp8198 Isobel queues to pick up the cabin keys imgp8199 The corridor to our cabins imgp8200 We head off for tea past the Dutch royal family imgp8201 The freight ferry has a reasonable canteen on it imgp8202 A tanker moored in Liverpool port imgp8205 Factory buildings by the ferry imgp8208 A tangle of pipes and tanks imgp8209 A glow of sodium-lit pipes imgp8213 The stern of a tanker imgp8214 Massive concrete silos imgp8219 Some sort of grain conveyor imgp8227 Stacked containers at the Port of Liverpool imgp8228 A curious hut on the dock imgp8231 Harry looks around imgp8233 A huge container crane imgp8235 Isobel and Fred look out over the Mersey imgp8237 An office/house on the dock imgp8245 The ferry's vehicle deck imgp8247 Mobile boarding ramps wait for passing ships imgp8251 In one of our cabins, ready for bed
