title The Extinction Rebellion Protest, Westminster, London - 9th October 2019 intro This week's two days cycle-commuting through London to the Paddington office has the slight twist that part of the route - through Trafalgar Square - is completely closed on account of the Extinction Rebellion (XR) sit-in protest. As it happens, cyclists are definitely not the enemy, and so it's an interesting diversion to get off and walk through tent city and catch a bit of the protest vibe. On the way back, the top end of the Mall, at Admiralty, is also closed, which means diverting past the Houses of Parliament with a chance to see what's going on in Parliament Square. Before that, there's a night out at Station 119 brewery tap room on Eye airfield. imgc5063 The Anubis-head graffiti is being painted over imgc5064 Funky tag near Liverpool Street imgc5065 Graffiti on a penthouse flat imgc5066 Slightly indecipherable graffiti tag imgc5067 Gerts graffiti on a brick wall imgc5068 Reptilians graffiti imgc5070 The crossing buttons at Hyde Park Corner are bust imgc5074 Marc and Suey in Station 119's tap-room bar imgc5075 The tap room at Station 119 imgc5076 Suey and Marc raise a glass imgc5077 Mick the Brick heads off imgc5078 Suey and Marc look at their devices imgc5079 Marc chats away imgc5080 Class 37 37424 smokes its way through Diss station imgc5081 Class 37 37403 heads off to Norwich imgc5083 Northumberland Avenue is blocked off imgc5084 Another banner on Northumberland Avenue imgc5085 Tent City in Trafalgar Square imgc5086 People roam around under a "Tell the truth" banner imgc5087 More tent city imgc5088 The top of Whitehall is all tents imgc5089 A businessman walks past an oil=boil banner imgc5090 Someone's hung their washing out to dry imgc5091 Looking up towards the Strand imgc5094 Some dude sits on top of a van imgc5095 People have come from far, wide, and Stoke imgc5096 A cyclist stops for a chat imgc5098 Nelson's Column gets some flags and flyers added imgc5099 There's a good vibe around the site imgc5101 You're burning our future imgc5104 A Trafalgar lion has an XR medallion around its neck imgc5106 An optimistic XR placard imgc5108 More tents in Trafalgar Square imgc5112 Some chalk-based protest statements imgc5114 Nelson's column imgc5115 Birdcage Walk is also closed off imgc5116 Tents on the streets near Westminster imgc5118 A lone drummer prowls the closed roads imgc5120 There's a mass of police in Parliament Square imgc5121 A bicycle rickshaw in Parliament Square imgc5122 A worried-looking woman is talked to by the rozzers imgc5126 The scene in Parliament Square imgc5127 Westminster Bridge is certainly quieter than usual imgc5131 Rozzers on horseback on Whitehall imgc5132 On the second day, there's a sit-in going on imgc5135 Whitehall is very quiet imgc5136 A Climate Justice banner imgc5139 The sit-in protestors get a pep talk imgc5140 There are even more tents today imgc5141 There's also a new pink octopus floating around imgc5144 A better world is possible imgc5146 Change is Now imgc5148 A Love banner imgc5149 There are a couple of pianos in Trafalgar Square imgc5151 Some people are dressed up imgc5152 There's a much heavier police presence this time imgc5154 There's a camping vibe in St. James's Park imgc5155 Some dude has a "Make Britain green again" sign imgc5156 Protestors carry some oversized bees on a stick imgc5157 A big sit-in occurs on Horseguard's Parade imgc5159 People on the streets of Westminster imgc5160 "West is a bollx farmet" and other anti-farmer graffiti
