title A Day in Derry, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland - 15th August 2019 intro As we wend our way from Dublin to Manorhamilton in the north west of Ireland, we've gone through Belfast and stopped off at the Giant's Causeway in Antrim. However now we're in the city of Derry/Londonderry for a night, on the 50th anniversary of the start of The Troubles, which started in Derry in August 1969 with the Battle of the Bogside. As we're walking around the city walls, we can see the paint and broken glass and smell the petrol from the petrol bombs the night before, which gives a certain gravitas to the exploration. It's also interesting to see the graffiti around the Bogside on Rossville Street, much of which has been re-worked by UV Arts to paint a less sectarian image, although it's also become something of a tourist magnet, especially since the "Derry Girls" mural went viral. However, the divisions still exist, as on one side of the city walls is the Nationalist Bogside with the murals and the tricolour flags, whilst the other side is clearly Loyalist, with its red, white and blue kerbs and the red hand flags. After we leave Derry, we drive down to Manorhamilton, with a quick stop off in Donegal and a couple of hours or so at Bundoran beach. imgp4091 Bushmills High Street imgp4094 The main roundabout in Bushmills imgp4095 Some nice flowers on the roundabout imgp4100 Bush House bar, with ancient Tennents and Bass signs imgp4102 We walk up the road to Molly Malone's bar imgp4106 Fred plays a bit of Molly Malone in the bar imgp4111 The boys play Connect 4 imgp4114 Bar life in Molly Malone's imgp4115 Fred plays his Irish piccolo by Molly Malone imgp4118 Harry and Fred in the B&B bedroom imgp4120 Our bedroom for the night imgp4121 The B&B's drive imgc4065 Harry at breakfast in the Derry B&B imgp4123 The boys mess around at William Street car park imgp4127 We look at some foxglove graffiti on Kells Walk imgp4129 Harry roams around Kells Walk imgp4130 Bobby Sands and various other Nationalist graffiti imgp4131 Another Derry mural imgp4132 Some IRA graffiti imgp4133 A small mural outside the Museum of Free Derry imgp4134 Civil Right and Anti Sectarian mural imgp4135 A boy holds a rock in the face of an armoured car imgp4136 Coloured squares and the shape of a dove imgp4137 A British Army sledgehammer smashes down doors imgp4138 A mural dedicated to Ernesto "Che Guevara" Lynch imgp4140 A Civil Rights Association mural imgp4141 The gang roam around on Rossville Street imgp4142 More murals imgp4144 Tourists wander around by the Battle of the Bogside imgp4145 The famous "Free Derry" sign is a bit blocked imgp4149 The Bogside Estate, and a Catholic schoolgirl mural imgp4156 Some dudes set up a firework dragon imgp4160 Paint splatters, from the protests the night before imgp4161 The Bogside imgp4163 Waterloo Street in Derry imgp4165 We enter the old city walls at Butcher Gate imgp4166 Fred and Harry look out over the walls imgp4169 Brightly-painted building on Magazine Street imgp4170 Castle Gate Buildings on Waterloo Street imgp4171 Isobel outside an "Irish Shop" imgp4172 Harry runs off imgp4176 Harry's on a cannon imgp4180 A square by the cathedral imgp4181 The dudes at the hipster barbers are bored imgp4184 Musical graffiti imgp4186 An interesting sculpture at the Millenium Forum imgp4188 Someone has vaguely Tippexed a smile on the statue imgp4189 The Derry Girls mural, by UV Arts imgp4192 A yellow Guiness sign on the Bentley Bar's gate imgp4193 The Derry Girls and Debenhams in the background imgp4195 Fred hugs a cannon imgp4197 The Loyalist side of Derry imgp4202 The kerb stones are all red, white and blue imgp4203 The red hand flag imgp4204 There's a nice musical painted bull in a garden imgp4206 A local dude tells a tale about Cú Chulainn imgp4208 The boys are mesmerised by the story telling imgp4209 Fred spots a "Stitch in Time" sign on the horizon imgp4212 There's a massive pallet bonfire being built imgp4214 Women of the Republican Struggle imgp4216 Nelson Mandela makes an appearance in mural form imgp4219 Inside the traditionally-built café in Craft Village imgp4220 Harry pours a Lemon Fanta imgp4224 There's some sort of craft workshop going on imgp4225 The red-and-white Foyle Books imgp4227 We walk down Harvey Street imgp4230 Some very Republican murals on Harvey Street imgp4232 There's a full-on tourist thing on Rossville Street imgp4234 Phone checking by photos of the Battle of the Bogside imgp4236 Looking out over Lough Swilly imgp4237 Isobel in the iron-age ring fort at Burt imgp4240 The hills of Burt imgp4241 Looking back over the City of Derry imgp4246 Isobel sits on a wall imgp4249 Within minutes, the boys have reverted to scrapping imgp4252 Harry hurls himself around imgp4259 Fred runs down a boardwalk imgp4262 Isobel queues up for coffee and hot chocolate imgc4068 The gang look out over Lough Swilly imgp4263 The river at Donegal imgp4266 The boys on the beach at Bundoran imgp4267 The beach at Bundoran imgp4272 The lifeguard's surfboard needs rescueing imgp4275 The rescue sufboard is hauled off imgp4279 The boys dig around in the sand imgp4286 The lifeguard plants a flag imgp4290 Fairground horses imgp4291 Isobel and Harry at the Bundoran fairground imgp4292 Fred gets ready for a bounce imgp4302 Fred's up in the air imgp4313 Isobel looks pensive on the dodgems imgp4326 Some kids are hurled around imgp4334 Fred has a go on the flying chairs imgp4343 Fred even manages to do a "dab" imgp4352 Fred's ride is over imgp4355 Gaudy knock-off Mickey Mice imgp4356 The Bundoran lifeguard station imgc4069 Builders' providers and firearms dealers
