title A June Miscellany: The End of Days, and Al Leaves Taptu, Diss and Cambridge - 13th June 2009 intro Nosher, with Fred installed as a kind of baby rucksack, is wandering about Diss and happens upon a bunch of knitters outside the old Woolworth's. It turns out that they're promoting "Transition Diss" - part of a growing movement which appears to bring together bits of ethical/climate-changey/sustainability philosophy with a healthy dose of post-industrial/post-apocalyptic "what happens after the collapse of society" fatalism - one of Nosher's favourite things and why there's always a good selection of tinned food and dried pasta in the house, and stuff growing in the garden. They've even done a bit of a Mill Road, Cambridge campaign with postit-notes of suggestion for what Woolies should be instead of the planned carpet shop. Later, there's another bike ride with The Boy, and Al Brayne at Taptu leaves to become a blacksmith/hippie and travel the world. imgp5727 On Mere Street, outside Woolworth's imgp5729 A knit-a-thon occurs on Mere Street imgp5731 The old Woolies is now a Carpet Right imgp5734 Knitters outside Woolies imgp5735 Postit Notes of hope imgp5743 A "Come and Knit!" sign imgp5747 The knit coordinator chats to the public imgp5752 Light through a venitian blind strikes a spiky plant imgp5758 Fred the Head flashes his baby blues imgp5768 Fred chews on a toy imgp5785 Smiling Fred imgp5787 Isobel's got Fred on her bike imgp5794 Isobel with The Boy cycles up Brome Avenue imgp5795 Isobel points out some chickens to Fred imgp5802 Fred and Isobel stop to look at chickens, near Eye imgp5807 Walking up the steep hill to the Eye Cricket Club imgp5808 A derelict shed near Abbey Bridge imgp5811 In the Taptu office, Jake inspects a pile of pizza imgp5814 Marc sneaks in to grab a slice imgp5816 Al checks out his leaving gifts imgp5821 Al has a drink imgp5822 The view from Nosher's desk
