title A Portrait of Hopgoods: Gentlemen's Outfitters, Diss, Norfolk - 4th January 2006 intro Hopgoods in Diss announced sometime during 2005 that it was closing down, as the proprietor wanted to retire. It's a quintessential traditional Gentleman's outfitters, and has customers who come far and wide, at least as far as London and Peterborough. Sadly, there doesn't seem to be much interest in buying into such traditional niche markets any more - even though it's popular in its own field - and so it seems unlikely that it will be taken on as a going concern and another part of rural life will disappear. Not really being a regular, despite the purchase of several belts and ties and suchlike over the years, there would not normally be grounds to pester for a photo-shoot, but luckily Nosher's chum Peter Allen works in the shop on Mondays and Wednesdays, so it provided a perfect opportunity on the last full day of holidays before the return to work to look round and document some of it - with thanks to Peter, and Mr. Hopgood for permission. imgp6318 Racks of suits, and a fitting mirror imgp6319 A customer in Hopgoods imgp6320 A whirly sock rack imgp6324 Towards the changing rooms imgp6326 Boxes of things imgp6327 A tailor's tape measure imgp6328 Stacks of shirts imgp6334 Pigeon-holes, full of gloves imgp6335 A pair of long-johns imgp6336 More cubby-holes, relfected in a convex mirror imgp6337 More stacks of shirts imgp6344 The bottom half of a manequin, suitably dressed imgp6345 A box of coat hangers, and a price list imgp6346 Peter mills around imgp6347 Peter puts some pyjamas away imgp6348 Peter checks that everything's OK imgp6349 Clerical, Lovat, Rustic and Oatmeal: mystery boxes imgp6350 A discarded pricing gun imgp6353 Peter at the front of the shop imgp6359 Jackets in a row imgp6360 A strange ex-window-display owl keeps watch imgp6361 A box of Hopgoods paper bags imgp6362 A collection of till rolls imgp6363 In the office, a small model of a Hopgoods van imgp6364 An 1860s-ish sketch of Diss's market place imgp6365 The Hopgood's repair and alterations room imgp6366 A sewing machine covered in fruit stickers imgp6367 Some repairing is done imgp6368 On the phone imgp6369 Another Singer sewing machine imgp6371 Some ironing is done imgp6372 Creases are pressed into a pair of trousers imgp6373 More backroom action imgp6376 A wooden pheasant on a shelf imgp6381 Piles of paper in a cupboard imgp6383 The staff "kitchen" imgp6388 A ton of business cards imgp6389 The repairer looks up imgp6390 A curious lever imgp6393 Peter checks a pile of clothing imgp6397 Branded coathangers: Butlin's and Cunard White Star imgp6399 A little memorabilia corner of Hopgoods imgp6400 Peter at the counter imgp6402 Peter, surround by shirts, looks at a red sock imgp6403 A Hopgoods clothes-brush imgp6404 Another bit of the shop imgp6407 Extras from an Auton episode of Dr Who imgp6409 A heap of size 7-and-a-quarter cloth caps imgp6412 Peter stands by the trousers imgp6416 Boxes of randomness imgp6417 A Hopgoods sign imgp6421 Peter and his assistant imgp6423 Peter runs out with a forgotten tripod imgp6426 Hopgoods - front aspect
