title Post-modern Alienation: Bleak House, a Diss Miscellany, Norfolk - 3rd December 2005 intro Whilst recent photos seem to emphasise the destruction of parts of Diss, there is also some construction to make up for it. The problem is that whilst the odd new building here and there tends to blend in unnoticed to existing infrastructure in something of an organic way, slapping up entire estates in one go is doomed to create a soul-less wasteland of bleak, identikit boxes. And so it is around Mission Road on the outskirts of Diss, where Yet Another Housing Estate is seemingly prefabricated from concepts straight out of "The Big Book of House Design 101" and dumped whole onto a muddy field. It really sums up - especially on a cold, cloudy day - how much of modern life is rubbish. But, before all that, there are a few photos of Nosher's old work's building - the former BPCC Printec (Development Workshop/Anglia Web/Polestar) - once part of Robert Maxwell's printing empire and now abandoned when production moved down the road to Severall's Lane in Colchester. imgp4846 Autumn leaves in Diss Park imgp4849b A winter tree imgp4851 Autumn leaves on the ground in the park imgp4852 Some geese roam around looking for trouble imgp4853 A view from Denmark Street imgp4854 The austere Baptist Chapel on Denmark Hill imgp4855 Nosher bumps into Penny of Suffolk County Council imgp4857 Some mystery mini-catacombs on Shelfanger Road imgp5098 Cat "B" - The Sock - lurks on the stairs imgp5099 Nosher's former office was the middle window imgp5101 A flag hangs ouside the former Printec offices imgp5104 Nosher's old office on Vince's Road imgp5105 Looking down Vinces Road imgp5106 The door to the old heatset-printing shed imgp5107 The former coldset printing shed is straight ahead imgp5108 An empty office to let imgp5111 Discarded service duct on the edge of Mission Road imgp5115 A new roundabout is built imgp5117 The remains of Mission Road imgp5119 A portaloo in the middle of a muddy field imgp5121 The drain seems a little proud of the ground imgp5123 Little boxes, made out of tiffy-taffy imgp5124 A show house on the new road imgp5126 Signs of life as a builder walks past imgp5129 A brick wall under construction imgp5131 Another brick in the wall imgp5134 The Portaloo again imgp5135 Tyre tracks, and half-finished garages imgp5136 A coned-off bit of Mission Road imgp5137 The road to nowhere imgp5140 Discarded Sawmills Road sign imgp5143 A new traffic island imgp5144 More pipe is lying around imgp5145 The New Buckenham Silver Band plays at Somerfield imgp5146 Twiglet Carl plays cornet by Somerfield imgp5149 The band plays "In the Bleak Midwinter" imgp5151 A shop on Mere Street gets some work done imgp5153 Christmas decoration in Larter and Ford imgp5154 The Browne's boys: Dan, Roger and Richard imgp5155 Dan Dan the Meat Man, of Browne's Butchers in Diss imgp5156 Richard's in the till imgp5157 Roger Browne checks some notes imgp5158 Roger and Richard imgp5159 Richard chops something up imgp5160 Christmas tinsel outside "This 'n' That" imgp5163 The Salvation Army band plays imgp5164 The Sally Army band outside NatWest imgp5166 Down by Mere's Mouth imgp5169 There's a bird explosion over the Oaksmere imgp5183 Sophie in a tree, in the late-afternoon light imgp5184 Soph-bags has a yowl imgp5186 The Sock stands on a bird bath and does a tail swish
