title The Demolition of Rainbow and the Building of Tesco, Diss, Norfolk - 7th August 2005 intro There's been a splurge of post-Gateway/Somerfield supermarket building in Diss, with Safeway appearing in the 1990s (and with it the first ever set of traffic lights in Diss) and then Tesco appearing on the site of the old Rainbow Co-op on Victoria Road, more or less next door. These photos document much of the process from the demolition of Rainbow to the skinning of the Tesco "warehouse" structure. The Rainbow co-op was one of those things about Diss that took a while to discover, much like the way the nice part of the town is unusually hidden away from main road that goes through the edge of it, in that it didn't actually look much like a place that sold food - even though it did - as its front window always seemed to be full of garden furniture. imgp8594 A view of the former Rainbow imgp8600 The old Rainbow is demolished imgp8601 Anglia Plant's gear is lying around imgp8605 The former entrance to Rainbow imgp8607 The side of the old Rainbow co-op imgp8611 Steel framework, and signs for the new Tesco imgp8612 The last remains of Rainbow's old branding imgp8615 The Mission Road estate continues imgp8617 Cones in the street imgp8618 A 1960s bungalow on Stuston Road imgp8621 The new houses on the old Bartrum's site imgp8624 A new housing estate on the edge of Diss imgp8646 A muntjac crosses the side field img_2022 A pile driver, er, drives piles img_2025 The skeleton of Tesco goes up img_2027 Some large beams are ready to be lifted img_2030 In places, the ground seems very disorganised img_2038 A big empty frame img_2039 There's bric-a-brac down in Diss img_2041 Diss Publishing gets its external boarding on img_2044 A discarded digger bucket img_2048 Tesco is prepped for a massive concrete floor img_2049 Part of the concrete floor has been laid already imgp0174 Wet concrete in Tesco imgp0175 The view towards Victoria Road imgp0176 Some of the side walls start to go up imgp1546 Inside Diss Publishing imgp1549 Diss Publishing is externally complete imgp1552 Tesco gets its outside walls on imgp1554 Concrete pads and piles of insulation imgp1558 The entrance to the new Tesco takes shape imgp1560 Looking down Victoria Road imgp1561 The splay on to what will become a new roundabout imgp1563 The old road disappears under the new car park imgp2049 A traffic island is constructed imgp2051 There's a cone in a hole imgp2052 Kerb stones are laid imgp3224 It's cone city on Victoria Road imgp3229 Dudes haul some temporary traffic lights about
