title A 1940s VE Dance At Debach Airfield, Debach, Suffolk - 11th June 2005 intro DH gets wind of a VE-day celebration dance, in 1940s style, at Debach Airfield near Woodbridge in Suffolk. Before long, fancy-dress fever grips the gang as various costumes are purchased from eBay and elsewhere in order to go with something of a suitable vintage, or at least with a nod to the period. The gig comes complete with camping privileges, so we arrive 45 minutes early to set up camp. This, it turns out, takes several attempts: we first pitch next to a noisy pig shed, then we end up where the line-up of military vehicles will end up, and finally we're "not quite in the alotted space" so it's fourth time lucky. When the event commences, there's an impressive array of military uniforms, Home Guard, land girls and evacuees, accompanied by the swing band "Sticky Wicket", plus the entertaining arrival of a Sherman tank during the proceedings. A few days before that, we head up to the Swan to test our gear out. img_1780 Bill and GI Marc in the Swan img_1781 Nosher in RAF gear img_1784 Suey as a WRAF sergeant img_1785 Marc at the bar img_1787 Bill, Suey and DH img_1791 Marc has a little sleep img_1792 DH reads some paperwork imgp6184 DH stands by his "tent" imgp6186 Captain Bill adjusts his tie imgp6187 The gang walk to the hangars imgp6190 Marc, Sue, Phil, Bill, David and Jen imgp6198 Inside the dance hangar imgp6202 Jen, Bill and Suey imgp6203 Marc the GI imgp6205 An Apprentice Sergeant, US Navy captain and GI imgp6213 DH and Marc imgp6224 The Boy Phil imgp6226 Suey and Marc imgp6230 Bill ponders his next move at the bar imgp6232 Phil, Jen and Suey imgp6243 Marc, Bill and DH chat to one of the wardens imgp6247 Clive "Chickens" and Suzanne dance around imgp6253 In black and white, it could almost be the war imgp6257 Not entirely 1940s sunglasses imgp6268 DH chats to the "tank boys" imgp6271 The tank lads imgp6276 Captain on deck imgp6280 Benches outside the hangar imgp6282 A ladder is held up by Richard, the co-owner imgp6287 Richard checks the time imgp6290 A Willys jeep arrives imgp6291 A Sherman tank appears, after a 5-year restoration imgp6295 Marc stands in front of the tank imgp6296 Heads pop up from the tank imgp6302 The Sherman driver leaps off the tank imgp6310 The Captain and the RAF imgp6311 Jen and Suey imgp6314 More dressed-up guests imgp6315 Veterans from the 493rd bomb group and 8th Air Force imgp6321 Marc gets a beer in imgp6334 The Boy Phil in his RAF threads imgp6340 Marc has a roll-up on the go imgp6345 Suey cleans her specs on Jen's trousers imgp6356 Some swinging action imgp6368 Marc has a doze imgp6372 "Sticky Wicket", the band imgp6393 The crowd applaud the band imgp6395 The drummer grins imgp6413 The piano and bass players imgp6418 DH and Suey have a dance imgp6433 Marc and another US Army chap imgp6439 The venue after the crowds have dispersed imgp6447 Jen and Sue scrounge some spare pancakes imgp6450 Back at the campsite imgp6451 Suey brews up a cuppa
