title An Elegy for a Shed, Hopton, Suffolk - 28th March 2005 intro The Boy Phil helps to clear out his Grandad's old sheds. Seeing as his grandad used to repair televisions and radios, the sheds are full of the most amazing heaps of hardware: wirelesses, 8-track stereos, ancient testing and measurement gear, user manuals from the 50s and hundreds of valves, mostly still in their boxes - including loads of classic Mullards. There are even a couple of proper old tellies - ones from the 70s with only 4 channel buttons (the fourth often being ITA2 and not Channel 4), including a Ferguson much like the one Nosher's own grandparents had. The collection has been untouched for a few years, and cobwebs inhabit the near- and far-reaches of the sheds. The task of clearing out is not a small one, and as in all such situations there's a bit of sadness that so much history must be binned or burned: these photos, within hours, were already historical records of something that once was. imgp4298 Heaps of stuff imgp4310 Janice, Phil's mum, pokes about imgp4311 Two tellies and a top-loading washing machine imgp4314 Mullard and Ediswan valves imgp4318 The valve room imgp4322 Phil rummages around imgp4325 Another view of the television shed imgp4333 Two folorn old tins of ICI Dulux paint imgp4335 Some sort of substantial electrical gear imgp4338 Richard, Phil's uncle, clears out imgp4339 The dark corners of a shed imgp4350 The back of a television imgp4354 A couple of field-strength voltmeters on a bench imgp4355 Janice through a window imgp4356 More valve boxes imgp4359 A poster for RGD televisions and radios imgp4372 The door of an adjacent shed imgp4379 A cobwebbed lightswitch and lock imgp4380 Shelves full of rotting paper imgp4383 A rotting door with peeling paint imgp4389 A box of old bottles imgp4399 A box of lightbulbs like a clutch of eggs imgp4402 Mick and Richard in a Nissen hut imgp4404 Uncle Mick burns up some stuff imgp4407 Surveying the scene imgp4410 Some hanging baskets imgp4412 Daffodils bloom amongst the detritus of a life imgp4416 A fantastic old fan imgp4417 Mick and Richard take time-out for a spot of lunch
