title A Brome Swan Trip to Calais and the Battery Todt, Cap Gris Nez, France - 11th August 2004 intro Realising that it was time to stock up on cheese, and wine for Claire's upcoming wedding, Alan from The Swan sorts out a day-trip to Calais. DH and Phil pile in with Nosher; Claire and Paul go with Alan. There's around eight hours in France, which is enough time for trips to the Hypermarché, le Wine et Beer Warehouse, Wimmereax, and an old German gun emplacement - part of the Batterie Todt and probably the Großer Kurfürst Battery - on Cap Gris Nez. It's a very strange experience creeping around in the almost-total dark, seeing wartime graffiti with caricatures of Churchill and Nazi slogans on the walls, picked out by the light of a small Maglite torch. dcp_7368 In the car queue for the ferry at 7:50am dcp_7369 Claire and Alan do the whole breakfast fry-up dcp_7372 Everyone peers over the side of the ferry dcp_7373 Claire wanders around the ferry dcp_7374 Under the lifeboats dcp_7375 DH and The Boy Phil are armed with trolleys dcp_7376 In the Auchan hypermarché at Coquelles dcp_7377 DH scopes out patê dcp_7378 DH checks out the cheese counter dcp_7379 Paul, Phil, Alan and DH at the checkout dcp_7380 We eat baguettes and cheese out of the boot dcp_7381 Nosher in a hat dcp_7382 Alan and Paul at a bar somewhere dcp_7383 The Boy Phil and DH have some crazy-strong Leffe dcp_7384 Claire and Alan dcp_7385 The Boy Phil dcp_7386 Phil looks at beer dcp_7387 Paul, Alan and Claire look for wedding wine dcp_7388 DH looks at wine dcp_7389 Phil and DH on the front at Wimmereaux dcp_7390 Alan and Claire dcp_7392 A pile of rocks dcp_7394 The seafront at Wimmereaux dcp_7396 On the promenade dcp_7398 We head off for a walk along the prom dcp_7399 Phil and DH scope out the beach dcp_7400 Souvenir and beach tat on the prom dcp_7401 Walking in Wimmereaux dcp_7403 Claire and Paul pass a very green house dcp_7404 More French houses in Wimmereaux dcp_7405 We stop at another bar dcp_7406 Phil and DH on the track towards the Battery Todt dcp_7407 We look for a way in dcp_7408 Phil peers out of a peep-hole dcp_7409 DH in a pill box dcp_7410 DH comes out of the pill box dcp_7411 We find the way in to the main gun emplacement dcp_7412 There's a lot of graffiti inside dcp_7413 An old light switch dcp_7414 Some WW2 graffiti dcp_7415 A Nazi flag, dive bombers and "against England" dcp_7416 The Nazi eagle dcp_7417 A caricature of Winston Churchill dcp_7418 Another cartoon of a two-faced Churchill dcp_7419 Nazi crosses and the swastika dcp_7420 DH pokes around in the concrete outside dcp_7421 The Boy Phil and DH look out towards England dcp_7422 We stand where the 12" guns would have been dcp_7423 The brutalist concrete of the Battery Todt dcp_7424 Former home of a 12" gun, aimed at Kent dcp_7425 DH roams about dcp_7428 Wartime graffiti dcp_7429 We leave the gun emplacement dcp_7430 Another look at the concrete dcp_7431 It's time for another ham-and-cheese picnic dcp_7433 The roadside picnic dcp_7434 Back at the ferry terminal dcp_7435 A view of the ferry dcp_7436 The massive pier at Calais dcp_7439 The stern of the ferry dcp_7441 The Boy Phil looks like he's about to hurl dcp_7442 Nosher and the arse-shaped chin
