title A Postcard From Manila: a Working Trip, Philippines - 9th July 2004 intro Nosher is required on a working trip to Manila to do a few presentations of Trigenix, accompanying sales-dude Julian. Following an 18-hour trip via Hong Kong to get there, most of the four day trip is taken up with work stuff. But there's still the odd afternoon to roam around a city which re-defines the concept of seething humanity and pollution, thanks in part to the many Jeepneys running around the city, belching fumes. Nosher also charters a taxi for an afternoon in order to explore the countryside a bit, and ends up in Tagaytay, with a nice view of the Taal volcano. It's also the time of Nosher's dyed red hair, which given that there are very few westerners in Manila anyway causes quite the stir, with people in the streets actually stopping to stare. It's interesting to be interesting for once. dcp_0277 A photo of Hani in the office, for some reason dcp_6782 A queue of aircraft at Heathrow dcp_6786 Terminal 5 is being built dcp_6787 The M4 motorway dcp_6789 The plane flies over Felixstowe dcp_6791 A very smelly horse and cart dcp_6793 Fort Santiago, the oldest buildings in Manila dcp_6794 There are loads of semi-feral cats sitting around dcp_6795 Fort Santiago dcp_6796 Julian looks out dcp_6798 Lots of buildings still show damage from WWII dcp_6800 More pony rides dcp_6804 A cannon and some WWII shells dcp_6808 One of Manila's many, vast, suburbs dcp_6809 A bronze soldier with rolled-up trousers dcp_6810 Julian roams around dcp_6813 An admin building has bullet holes from the war dcp_6814 A small snack shack dcp_6815 A brightly-painted Jeepney dcp_6816 The church of San Agustin dcp_6817 Roaming around the streets on Intramuros dcp_6818 A building wrapped in bunting dcp_6819 A curious thatched shack dcp_6821 Julian walks about, nervously dcp_6822 People in the streets dcp_6823 A collection of statues on a street corner dcp_6824 A silver Willys jeep dcp_6826 Some dudes in a rickshaw cycle past dcp_6828 Another Jeepney dcp_6829 A metal-framed motorbike side car dcp_6830 Julian leans on a wall dcp_6831 There's some major overhead electric stuff going on dcp_6832 One of many shanty towns on the edge of the city dcp_6833 More impressive electrics dcp_6834 Julian checks his phone in the hotel dcp_6837 We set up for a presentation on the 33rd floor dcp_6838 The city and pollution of Manila dcp_6842 Julian on a laptop dcp_6846 Another view from our presentation office dcp_6847 Getting the lift dcp_6848 Downtown buildings dcp_6850 Julian tries shoes in a fancy shopping mall dcp_6851 Dinner at Oodl's Noodle Restaurant in "Greenbelt 4" dcp_6852 The arse end of a silver Jeepney dcp_6853 Derelict huts dcp_6854 More countryside buildings, and a Jeep dcp_6862 Out in the countryside, 80km away from Manila dcp_6864 Looking out towards the Taal volcano dcp_6865 More flowers by a roadside dcp_6866 Verandas and balconies dcp_6869 The crater of the Taal volcano straight ahead dcp_6873 Rural street life dcp_6874 PNP Outpost shack, with a hand-made sign to Manila dcp_6877 A fruit seller's shack dcp_6879 An abandoned-looking motorbike and sidecar dcp_6880 More street scenes dcp_6882 A big sign for Tagaytay dcp_6883 Nosher's driver Dinu wanders back to the car dcp_6884 The Jeepney ride up to the park is 30 Pesos dcp_6886 The Jeepney park at People's Park in the Sky dcp_6888 The view from the People's Park dcp_6891 Another view over volcano lake dcp_6895 Parasols in the People's Park dcp_6897 A family of fruit sellers dcp_6898 The fruit family dcp_6910 Back in Manila dcp_6911 We have dinner with the local contact dcp_6912 Julian on the plane, as we head back to the UK dcp_6914 A serene view out of the plane window
