A New Zealand Road Trip - November 1992
Nosher and his dad head off from the Motel in Ferry Landing on a road trip around the North Island of New Zealand. We were originally scheduled to borrow Dad's brother's car, but he'd just pranged it round a tree the week before. So, instead, we get the use of cousin Steve's 3.7 litre Ford Falcon - a huge tank of a car with a bench for a front seat and a thirst for petrol. We drive down through Rotorua (Nosher gets a bit ill here thanks to the pervasive stink of sulphur in the air) and stay in a small B&B with its own volcanic-spring-fed spa (mmm, silky). From there, it's through Taupo and across the desert down to Palmerston North. After spending the night with some more rellies (and recovering from the Rotorua malaise) we head back up the west coast through Wanganui and right up to the Bay of Islands. Here, The Old Chap splashes out on a nice apartment for a couple of days, and we hang out before returning to The Coromandel.
