title Margaret Thatcher's Funeral, St. Paul's, London - 17th April 2013 intro The era of Maggie Thatcher covered pretty much Nosher's entire academic and formative life, from the age of 12 up to the end of polytechnic, and just beyond to 23. Obviously, Polytechnic is where it's more-or-less compulsory to be "anti Stuff", even if Nosher's political involvement was mostly working for the student magazine Fly and photographing student demos against various Thatcherite policies. The funeral happens to be taking place about 200 metres away from the usual cycle route from Liverpool Street station to work, the roads are all closed anyway and - seeing as it's unlikely we will see a politician worthy of a state funeral for several more generations - it was an opportunity too good to miss. And so it was that Nosher bunks off work for 50 minutes to observe the proceedings from the south side of St. Paul's Cathedral. imgp9905 The increasingly-derelict A Senger building imgp9906 The edge of the Crossrail development in Stratford imgp9908 A new railway viaduct is built imgp9911 More concrete construction imgp9914 Concrete silos at Crossrail imgp9917 Major construction on the Stratford Crossrail site imgp9923 Silver tags on a railway bridge imgp9925 More new graffiti on the trackside imgp9927 The eerie sight of a car-free Cannon Street imgp9931 A military type and a rozzer, on Cannon Street imgp9932 The world's media is in attendance imgp9934 A heavily-armed Land Rover unit roams around imgp9944 A City of London Rozzer, in ceremonial uniform imgp9945 A small protest is occuring imgp9946 Someone with a creepy Thatcher mask on imgp9949 More political masks imgp9952 A protester is interviewed imgp9953 The anti-Thatcherites are quizzed by a student imgp9955 Photographers are everywhere imgp9958 The view around St. Paul's imgp9974 The flag-draped coffin stops by St. Paul's imgp9983 The gun carriage and coffin heads up to St. Paul's imgp0001 The scene on St. Paul's Churchyard imgp0002 The clock of St. Paul's shows it's nearly time imgp0004 A Met sergeant and an RAF type imgp0007 The band heads back down St. Paul's Churchyard imgp0013 Another military band in Bearskins imgp0020 Bikes are pressed in to service as a vantage point imgp0021 St. Paul's Churchyard imgp0023 The crowds dissipate after the service moves inside imgp0030 The continuing protest, with a yellow coffin imgp0032 More interviewing imgp0036 Military types hang around on a traffic island imgp0038 A soldier points imgp0042 The corner of Cannon Street and New Change imgp0044 Temporary barricades all around St. Paul's imgp0045 Cannon Street and St. Paul's imgp0049 Heading back up Cannon Street imgp0051 When Nosher gets to work, the office is deserted
