Postcards from Mussolini, and how to evacuate - 1939

An invitation to DH's grandfather, R. T. Macfarlane, from the Lord Chamberlain, George Herbert Hyde Villiers, to attend a garden party at Buckingham Palace on 20th July 1939. Included in the envelope were two slightly-surreal postcards of the Lord Chamberlain meeting Benito Mussolini, fascist dictator of Italy. Remember that this was the era that the other Chamberlain, Neville (Prime Minister), was proclaiming "Peace in our Time!". Also included, by reason of ironic juxstaposition, is a scan of a document outlining the Civil Defence evacuation plans - issued July 1939, only two months before the declaraion of World War Two. Both items courtesy of the David Hardaker Collection.
